Herbs & Spices · Food pairing guide
What goes with Za'atar?
Here za'atar means the mixed table seasoning, typically built from dried thyme-like or oregano-like herbs, sumac and toasted sesame. It is not a single fresh herb. Sesame supplies little crunchy seeds and a roasted note, sumac contributes tartness, and the herbs give a dry savoury perfume. Some blends contain substantial salt or additional spices, so their balance is not interchangeable.

Pairing principles
What pairs well with Za'atar?
Choose whether the blend should behave as a crust, a moist seasoning or a last aromatic layer. Bread, strained yoghurt and lamb give its seeds and herbs a substantial base. Tomatoes and cucumber supply moisture and freshness, but their acidity may reduce the need for extra lemon. For delicate fish or dairy desserts, keep the herb fraction measured so sesame and tartness remain legible.
